Association Advocating for Women and Community (AWAC)
Provides safe places for marginalized women. Operates a 24-hour Emergency Shelter with 40 beds for self-identified women ages 19 and over. Provides shower and laundry facilities. Shelters accept self-referrals. The shelter cannot accommodate pets. Wheelchair accessible, but must be able to self-transfer. Beds are assigned first come, first served starting at 7:30 pm. Also offers Outreach Services in a separate space in the same building. Provides meals and phone access. Outreach workers can support individuals of any gender ages 19 and over who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless, or difficult to house. Provides help with obtaining identification, status cards, as well as accessing income assistance and other social services. Connects individuals to housing options by providing support with the application process; rent and utility subsidies may be available. Also provides information and referral to community resources, and accompaniment to appointments such as medical or court. Funded as a Homelessness Outreach Program (HOP) by BC Housing. Office hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Nonprofit society, registered charity.
