Coordinates and supports local food security initiatives in the Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighbourhood of Vancouver. Community Food Markets provide fresh fruits and vegetables at wholesale cost or below; see website for times and locations. A Garden Veggie Share and Swap at the markets allows neighbours to swap extra produce with each other. Offers food skills workshops at Trout Lake Community Centre and Kensington Community Centre including workshops on cooking, food, gardening, herbalism, fermenting, permaculture, and breadmaking. The Kensington-Cedar Cottage Food Asset Map highlights food assets in the neighbourhood such as grocery stores/markets, food programs, and gardens. Also offers Seedy Saturday at Kensington Library, a seed sharing library and gardening workshops; Kingcrest Community Garden; Intergenerational Garden Project to connect youth and seniors through gardens; and Medicine Wheel Garden at John Hendry Park, a learning garden with native and medicinal plants. Partners with Copley Community Orchard, a neighbourhood urban orchard, to provide food security programs and build community. In partnership with Vancouver Community Fridge Project, the Kensington-Cedar Cottage Residential Community Fridge offers 24-hour access to a full fridge, freezer, and pantry for those in need; located in the alley behind 4040 Victoria Drive. Accepts donations of food including cooked and home-cooked meals, as well as non-food items such as baby formula, pet food and supplies, individually wrapped eating utensils, sanitary/hygiene products such as personal protective equipment (PPE), and Naloxone kits; items must be unopened/unused. Does not accept unsealed or half consumed food; mouldy or expired produce; raw or cooked fish and meat; food that has been recently recalled; food that poses known health risks (such as Salmonella); or alcohol.
