Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is mandated to conduct investigations into incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the actions or inactions of a police officer, whether on or off duty. It has jurisdiction over all of BC's policing agencies, including 12 municipal agencies, the RCMP, the Metro Vancouver Transit Police and the Stl'atl'imx Tribal Police Service. The IIO is led by a Chief Civilian Director (CCD), who cannot ever have served as a member of a police force. Even though the director is under the Ministry of Attorney General, the office is operationally independent from government. Through the witness line, accepts only information from witnesses pertaining to an investigation of police actions or inactions; does not accept complaints from victims. Victims can file complaints about municipal police through the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC), and RCMP police through the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP (CRCC).
