Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter

Provides safe, secure, temporary shelter and support for women (born female) with or without children, who are fleeing violent relationships or are at-risk of abuse, threats, or violence. Accepts male children up to age 19 on a case-by-case basis. Accepts refugees and refugee claimants, as well women from out of province. Length of stay is approximately 30 days. High-barrier house; must be able to live cooperatively and take care of oneself. Gives women a safe and supportive living environment with access to daily living requirements such as clothing, toiletries, and nutritious meals. Offers resource information to enable women to explore their options and define their goals as well as assist with the development of safety plans. Personal identification (ID) not required. Wheelchair accessible. Will work to find safe accommodation for pets through boarding or temporary foster care, or, on a case-by-case basis, in the shelter. Also provides shelter to women who are in crisis and experiencing/at-risk of homelessness. 24-hour Rape Crisis Line provides emotional support and referrals to anyone who calls. Crisis centre services include telephone and in-person peer counselling, support groups, transportation, medical and legal accompaniment, support to affected family and friends, advocacy with police, and advocacy support such as form completion assistance for all females who have experienced male violence (sexual assault, battery, rape, incest, prostitution, trafficking, and sexual harassment). Provides services to women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, in particular, women who have experienced violence or are at risk of violence. Helps individuals access rental housing in the private market, through support services such as referrals to housing options, information on other housing subsidies, housing search assistance, and rent supplements. Funded by BC Housing as a Homeless Prevention Program (HPP). Also offers public education and speakers' bureau about male violence against women. Operated by a feminist collective.
