BC Coroners Service Special Investigations Unit (SIU)

Service Description

Investigates and determines the circumstances of all unnatural, sudden and unexpected, unexplained, or unattended deaths, and makes recommendations to improve public safety and prevent death in similar circumstances. Handles complex types of death investigations including in the resource industry, police-involved deaths, and intimate partner and family violence. The Drug Deaths Investigation Team (DDIT) completes investigations into all accidental deaths resulting from illicit drug use, with the goal of supporting evidence-based efforts in prevention. Queries about drug death investigations can be emailed to BCC.DIT@gov.bc.ca. In partnership with police agencies, seeks public assistance to identify found human remains. Serves BC.
