Service Description

Serves disadvantaged residents of the Downtown Eastside and neighbouring communities with a low-cost cafeteria, library, learning centre, theatre, gym, weight room, pool room, and seniors lounge. Programs and services include community education (with a focus on literacy), volunteer opportunities, First Nations cultural sharing, HIV and hepatitis support groups, activities for seniors, and recreational programs. Free haircuts are available at 10 am on Wednesdays. Centre hours are 9 am to 11 pm daily. Membership costs $1 per year. Food Services include a low-cost breakfast from 9 am to 11 am Monday to Friday, lunch from 12 noon to 4 pm Monday to Saturday, and dinner from 5 pm to 8 pm daily; takeout is available. Provides a Mail Service; the Centre will accept personal mail for members and hold it for up to a month (no bills and no packages). The front desk will accept slips for registered mail items, but the items will be held at the local post office. Cheques will be held at the third-floor administration office which is open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday; members must present photo ID to retrieve cheques. Regular mail can be picked up during Centre hours. Also offers a Community Voice Mail service; members can set up an account with the Volunteer Programmer, then dial in to retrieve voice messages. The Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) works to improve the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood through advocacy regarding more and better housing, better income for residents, and other community issues; does not provide individual advocacy services. Office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday.
