Service Description

Offers programs and services for registered refugee families with children from birth to six years of age who have arrived in Canada within the last five years. The Newcomers' Group supports refugee parents with young children by providing information on early childhood development and health issues. Family Settlement Support Workers provide individual support by helping families develop and work through a settlement plan focused on early childhood development and parenting in Canada. The Early Learning Orientation Program works with parents and children to overcome specific developmental needs, attachment issues, and parenting challenges, as well as making referrals for additional support/intervention when necessary. It also prepares children to transition to other childcare settings. Programs may be offered by phone, email, online, or in person, and are available in Amharic, Arabic, English, Farsi, Korean, and Tigrinya. Program hours are from 9:30 am to 2 pm Wednesday to Friday; a hot lunch and healthy snack are served. There is also a Teaching Kitchen where parents learn to prepare nutritious meals over Zoom from 11 am to 12 noon on Mondays. Also provides outreach services in the community to help families navigate and locate other supports. Serves Burnaby and New Westminster. Funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
