Service Description

Provides a variety of food-related programs. Coffee, water, and snacks are available from 10 am to 12 noon on Wednesdays. A Food Bank provides groceries to low-income people by appointment; hours are 10 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 3 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Registration is required; new clients must present ID including proof of income and address. The Good Food Box offers $20 minimum worth of fresh produce for $12; order before the first Thursday of the month before pickup on the following Thursday. Also offers Emergency Food Hampers and Christmas Hampers. The Milk For Kids Program provides one litre of milk per week per child; also offers a Baby Formula Program for infants and toddlers. A Baby Days event, held once every two months, allows parents and grandparents to take home baby items such as clothing, diapers, formula, toys, and other available baby items. School programs include a Read and Feed program that supplies breakfast to children in partnership with local elementary schools, and Food in the Sun school-based breakfast program during the summer; parents can choose breakfast and bag lunch items for their school-aged children and toddlers three times a week. A Seniors Only Day is hosted to meet the needs of seniors. Office hours are 9:30 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.

COVID-19 Update (June 7, 2023): The Alberni COVID-19 Community Response is five local organizations working to coordinate distribution of food and supplies to Port Alberni families and individuals in need. Hot meals and supplies are available for pickup between 11 am and 3 pm daily at the Salvation Army building (4835 Argyle Street); some delivery are available to shut-ins.
