Humanities 101 Community Programme

Service Description

Offers free non-credit, university level courses to people living in the Downtown Eastside and surrounding areas who have an interest in knowledge and education, especially whose economic situation, academic experience, and financial and social well-being are compromised. Humanities 101 and Humanities 201 are eight-month courses that take interdisciplinary approaches to critical and creative thinking within the arts, humanities, and social sciences; lectures occur twice a week. Writing 101 and Writing 201 are three-month writing courses offered twice a year. All students receive course materials, bus tickets, meal vouchers, childcare, and student cards for access to UBC amenities. Classes are taught by UBC professors and graduate students who donate their time and resources. Public Programme series also offers study groups, workshops, field trips, and public lectures in Downtown Eastside South community centres.
