Indigenous Health Program

Advocates for, and provides support to Indigenous patients and their families who are visiting the hospital. The team can assist with navigating hospital procedures and protocols; accompany patients to clinic appointments; ensure needs are heard by medical teams; explain medical advice; connect patients to resources; attend care plan and discharge planning meetings; assist with complaints; and connect patients to culture, traditional medicines, and Elder support. Indigenous patient navigators walk alongside patients and families and also offer traditional medicines and provide access to the designated sacred space to burn traditional medicines. Elders and Knowledge Keepers are also available to provide emotional and cultural support upon request. Covers advocacy services for BC Women's Hospital and Health Centre as well as for BC Children's Hospital, and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. Accepts self-referrals. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.
