Service Description

Licensed, first-stage stabilization and transitional living residence (STLR) assists self-identified women ages 19 and up, who are struggling with substance misuse and post-detox, and who are in the transition from post-acute withdrawal to a stable routine. Women are introduced to the 12 steps through a feminist lens; the program is holistic and client-centered with a trauma-informed responsive approach. Programming includes daily process/education groups, weekly on-site addictions specialist doctor and concurrent disorders nurse, weekly counselling through community health centers (online), self-help meetings (online), personal recovery plan activities, and a life skills program that includes interpersonal communication, problem solving, self-awareness, time management, meal planning, house-keeping, and financial budgeting. Entry requirements are 72 hours of abstinence, a readiness to participate in a highly structured, communal living environment, and ability to work within a group. Accepts clients on substitution therapy, including Kadian and benzodiazepines. Program length depends on the individual and can be up to 18 months or longer if warranted. Referrals are accepted from addictions counsellors, other addiction service providers, or any other professional (doctor, therapist, and social worker). Women are required to check in weekly with the intake worker to maintain their spot on the waitlist, names are removed after one month of no contact. Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction client fees are paid for by the Ministry. Funded as Stabilization and Transitional Living Residence (STLR) by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).
