Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB)

Provided by: Ministry of Housing

Service Description

Oversees the relationship between landlords and tenants and is responsible for the administration of the Residential Tenancy Act and the Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act. Provides information and tips to help landlords and tenants have successful tenancies. If disputes come up, the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) can help parties resolve the issues. Landlords and tenants can apply for dispute resolution with the RTB if they can't resolve a problem related to their tenancy. The Compliance and Enforcement Unit conducts investigations of repeated or serious non-compliance with tenancy laws or orders of the Residential Tenancy Branch, issues warnings to ensure compliance and if necessary, administers monetary penalties. Complaints may be submitted for consideration only when all attempts to resolve the matter have been made through the RTB resolution service; complaints can be submitted online.

Services may be accessed by phone, email, or through self-serve kiosks at the office. Applications, evidence, and payments are primarily submitted online, but can also be done in person; check Service BC website (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/governments/organizational-structure/ministries-organizations/ministries/citizens-services/servicebc) regarding submitting documents and payments. Notice of Dispute Resolution Hearing packages are generally emailed, but may also be picked up in person. Office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday, except on the last Wednesday of the month when the office is open from 11 am to 4 pm.
