Sexual Assault Service (SAS) - Vancouver (VGH Emergency Department)

Service Description

Provides sensitive, confidential, and comprehensive health and emotional care to anyone from any province or country, age 13 and over, who has been sexually assaulted within the past seven days. Services include assessment and treatment of injuries and sexually transmitted infections. At the survivor's request, forensic samples can be collected for legal purposes. Also offers referrals to health, legal, and community-based support services. Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patients are welcome to bring a friend, family member, or support person to the hospital; CIS and trans women, two-spirit, and non-binary patients may arrange for a Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre counsellor to meet them at the hospital. No referral or adult accompaniment is required. Interpretation available for individuals who are deaf or have difficulty with English. Also provides information and education to the public, community groups, medical personnel, and professional agencies, and trains sexual assault nurse examiners and physicians.
