Service Description

Native Courtworkers facilitate access to justice by assisting Indigenous people in conflict with the law who are involved in the criminal justice system to obtain fair, just, equitable and culturally sensitive treatment. Services include referral to legal services, as well as information and advice concerning rights, responsibilities, and options. Also provides advocacy and liaises with justice personnel to help overcome communication barriers through information that increases understanding of the perspective of the Indigenous accused. Offers court accompaniment, and can interpret the court process and provide translators. Advises about alternative justice processes and community-based justice initiatives if available, and provides referral to other community services to address underlying issues. Youth court services assist in developing diversion programs, explaining charges, and court preparation. Also offers counselling and referrals to victims of crime. Serves Port Coquitlam and Surrey. Office hours are 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Jointly funded by Ministry of Attorney General and Department of Justice.
