VIDUS (Vancouver Injection Drug User Study) Project

Provided by: British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU)

Service Description

A multi-year investigation which, since 1996, has been following 1,500 injection drug users in lower mainland communities. Every six months, participants are tested for HIV and hepatitis C, and are interviewed about drug use patterns and practices, health status and access to health and social services, and interactions with the criminal justice system. Analysis of this information has contributed to a number of policy developments, including the expansion of needle exchange and distribution services, and the evaluation of Insite, Vancouver's supervised injection site. The study also performs an important public health function by providing regular HIV and hepatitis C testing (including pre- and post-test counselling) to local injection drug users. Office hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
