Adult Protection and Decision-Making

Designated agency mandated to investigate all reports of adults aged 19 and over in the Yukon who may be abused or neglected, including older adults and adults with a physical or intellectual disability who are unable to seek help for themselves. Social workers work with community responders to ensure that an intervention is not intrusive and is guided by the adult's values and beliefs. Only in circumstances where it appears that the adult is not capable of obtaining help will a more formal inquiry proceed, under authority of the Adult Protection and Decision-Making Act. Reports can be made anonymously and the act also protects the identity of a person making a report. Also provides a range of tools to assist adults who have some diminished ability to make their own decisions. Tools include Supported Decision-Making Agreements, Representation Agreements, court-appointed guardianship, and adult protection. Office hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday in Whitehorse. Check website for phone numbers in other communities. Serves Yukon.
