Better at Home - Agassiz-Harrison Hot Springs

Assists seniors age 65 and over who are in general good health, but require help with non-medical daily tasks to maintain independent living within their homes and remain connected to their communities. Services include light housekeeping, friendly visits, and transportation for medical appointments and grocery shopping. Fees are charged for some services on a sliding scale (based on income). Program hours vary; office hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Serves the District of Kent (Agassiz, Harrison Mills, Kent Prairie, Kilby, Mount Woodside, Ruby Creek, and Sea Bird Island) and the Village of Harrison Hot Springs. Services provided under contract to Chilliwack Community Services. Funded by Ministry of Health (MOH) and managed by United Way British Columbia


Provides accompanied and unaccompanied transportation to seniors for all purposes (medical and non-medical appointments, shopping, and social excursions); medical appointments take priority. Individuals must be a resident of the District of Kent or Harrison Hot Springs with no proof of income required. Services include help with vehicle entry/exit, but driver cannot lift client; client must be able to transfer themselves from a wheelchair in and out of a vehicle. Space is available for an attendant. Can accommodate a walker or wheelchair and service animals depending on the vehicle. Serves Abbotsford or Chilliwack, depending on the schedule; pick-up location is at client's home and drop-off location is anywhere from Vancouver to Hope. Service hours are anytime a volunteer driver is available. Transportation twice a month for shopping in either Abbotsford or Chilliwack depending on the schedule is by a volunteer-driven bus with designated pick-up and drop-off points/accompaniment; pre-registration at least one day prior is required. Transportation for medical appointments and grocery shopping is by car with a volunteer driver. Booking is required a minimum of three business days before a trip; booking hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday or a message can be left other times. Multiple appointments may be booked in one trip. Booking of regular trips is permitted. No limit to the number of trips booked per month. Pre-registration for personal needs can be done in person or via agency website. Cost to client is 50 cents per kilometre for a round trip of the volunteer driver, and clients are responsible for parking and/or other costs. Clients are invoiced monthly. Service is provided in English; interpretation service is available. Office hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
