Better at Home - Vancouver (Hastings-Sunrise)

Service Description
Assists seniors ages 60 and over who are in general good health, but require help with daily tasks to maintain independent living within their home and community as long as possible. Services may include grocery shopping, light housekeeping, and friendly visits. Self-referral accepted. Serves the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood (east of Nanaimo Street to Boundary Road, and north of East Broadway to the Burrard Inlet). Free and sliding-scale fee services. Office hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Managed by United Way BC, and funded by Ministry of Health.
Through the Transportation Service, provides transportation to individual seniors ages 60 and over to non-surgical medical appointments, as well as weekly group transportation to shopping. Service includes pick-up and drop-off; may include accompaniment, depending on availability of driver. Individuals must be a residents of the Hastings-Sunrise area, which runs from Nanaimo Street east to Boundary Road, and from East Broadway north to Burrard Inlet. Provides help with vehicle entry/exit, and space for personal attendant. May be able to accommodate a walker, wheelchair, or scooter, depending on the vehicle. Pick-up and drop-off locations are Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, and Vancouver. Service hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Transportation is a volunteer-driven vehicle. Booking is required 48 hours in advance; booking hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. Multiple appointments may be booked in one trip, and booking of regular trips is permitted. Trips are dependent on driver availability. 24 hours notice is required to cancel a trip. Pre-registration with the Better at Home program is required by phone. Cost to client is $15 to $30 per trip based on a sliding scale according to the individual's income. Subsidies are available. Clients are responsible for parking costs; clients pay directly for each trip. Service provided in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin; interpretation service is not available. A waitlist is maintained. Typical time on waitlist before accessing service is one to two months.
