Service Description

Provides paratransit services for any person ages 12 and up with a physical (temporary or permanent), sensory, or cognitive disability who is unable to use the regular transit system without assistance; shared-ride service. Walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, and service animals are accommodated. Offers subscription trips to a set location, which recur at the same time on a daily or weekly basis, as well as casual trips for one-time service, which may be booked up to seven days in advance and no later than 4 pm the day before the trip; riders are advised that HandyDart shuttles experience rush hour booking demand like any other mode of transportation. Preregistration required; see website for an application form or call the office to have one mailed. Booking hours are 8 am to 4 pm daily; trip reservations can be made by telephone. Earliest pick-up is 6 am and latest drop-off is 12 midnight. Riders are advised to be ready for pickup 15 minutes before the scheduled trip; driver may arrive 15 minutes before or after the scheduled trip time. Passengers are picked up and dropped off at accessible doors, and receive help with vehicle entry/exit if needed. Passengers with dementia will not be left unattended at their destination; a caregiver must be on hand to receive the person.

Customers with a permanent disability receive a HandyCard, which allows them to purchase FareSavers (10-ticket booklets for use on HandyDART), Monthly Fare Cards (paper monthly passes for use on HandyDART), and TaxiSavers (coupons worth $50 that are sold for $25, with a limit of two books per month, used to supplement taxi trips if HandyDart is unavailable; listed separately). Having a HandyCard also permits the card holder's attendant (age 18 and up and able-bodied, and needed to assist) to travel free on public buses, SeaBus, and SkyTrain within Metro Vancouver; escorts may also ride, but must pay the fare.

HandyDART fares are $3 per trip when paying by cash or blue Compass Card (see below for purchase requirements), or $2.40 per trip for HandyCard holders when using a FareSaver ticket.

FareSavers (10-ticket booklets for use on HandyDART) may be purchased by HandyCARD holders:
  • from the HandyDART driver ($24 cash or a cheque made out to HandyDART, First Canada ULC); weekdays only
  • by phone 604-575-6600 (select Option 7) from 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday (credit card required)
  • from the HandyDART office, 17535 55B Avenue, Surrey, V3S 5V2;
    • in person (cash, credit card, cheques/money orders payable to HandyDART, First Canada ULC)
    • by mail (cash, credit card, cheques/money orders payable to HandyDART, First Canada ULC). Monthly Fare Cards will be mailed or sent by courier if the passenger is unable to come to the HandyDART office.
Monthly Fare Cards (paper monthly passes for use on HandyDART) may be purchased by HandyCard holders:
  • by phone 604-575-6600 (select Option 7) fro 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday (credit card required)
  • from the HandyDART office, 17535 55B Avenue, Surrey, V3S 5V2
    • in person (cash, credit card, cheques/money orders payable to HandyDART, First Canada ULC)
    • by mail (cash, credit card, cheques/money orders payable to Fi). Monthly Fare Cards will be mailed or sent by courier if the passenger is unable to come to the HandyDART office.

All HandyDART riders may also purchase a blue Compass Card for use on HandyDART, buses, SkyTrain, and Sea Bus. Compass Cards can only be used on HandyDART if purchased and reloaded though HandyDART office (Compass Cards are checked by dispatch, and those purchased elsewhere will not be accepted). Purchases through the HandyDART office (17535 55B Avenue, Surrey, V3S 5V2) can be made:
  • in person (cash, credit card, cheques/money orders payable to HandyDART, First Canada ULC)
  • by mail (cash, credit card, cheques/money orders payable to HandyDART, First Canada ULC). Cards will be mailed or sent by courier if the passenger is unable to come to the HandyDART office.

UPass cards can be used on HandyDART if passenger carries a valid student ID. Orange Concession Compass Cards and red BC Bus Passes cannot be used on HandyDART. Serves Metro Vancouver (Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, West Vancouver, and White Rock).
