Indigenous Liaison Nurses and Indigenous Patient Navigators

Assists Indigenous people and their families to access culturally safe, quality health care services. Services include assisting with patient support during hospital stay and discharge, accessing First Nations Health Authority Benefits and/or non-insured health benefits, getting a compassionate parking pass for a family member, and referrals to community resources. Helps patients access pastoral care, or connects them with an Elder for spiritual, emotional, and cultural support. Advocates on behalf of patients' individual rights to be consulted and active in decisions about health care. Helps patients understand health care processes, provides education and awareness for hospital staff, and facilitates communication and cultural understanding between patients and care providers. The Indigenous Liaison Nurse program is available at all Island Health hospitals. The Indigenous Patient Navigator program is currently offered at select Island Hospitals.
