Legal Advocacy Program and Early Resolution Program
Provides free legal advice, advocacy, support, and referral services to women in the Downtown Eastside. The Legal Advocacy Program deals with issues related to Poverty and Family Law, including; income assistance (PWD, OAS, Government benefit supplements), police complaints, human rights, employment, family, tenancy and judicial review. Clients can self-refer by phone, email or in person to be added to the call/email backlist to book an intake appointment. The Community Legal Clinic hosts a monthly drop-in session on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 1 pm to 3 pm; arrive by 1 pm to be considered for an appointment. Appointments are drawn by lottery and those selected will have appointments for that drop-in session. Those who are not selected by the lottery draw are welcome to try again at the next drop-in session and/or leave information on the call/email back list to book an appointment. Clients are welcome to drop in, call, or email anytime during opening hours and staff will do their best to help. The Early Resolution Program deals with issues related to Criminal Law. Supports defense lawyers and women who may qualify for an early resolution, including alternative measures to the traditional court process. Women who successfully complete the program will not have a criminal record. Lawyers and clients can self-refer by filling out the intake form, available on the website. Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm. Funded by the Law Foundation of British Columbia.
