Poverty Law Advocacy Program
Provides advocacy in the following areas: Income Assistance (applications, PWD application, reconsideration, appeals, tribunals, Ministry calls); tenancy (BC Housing applications, subsidy housing application, co-op issues, residential tenancy hearings, landlord negotiations, letters to landlords on client behalf, written contacts between landlords and tenants); federal benefits (Canada Pension application (CPP), Old Age Security application (OAS), Guaranteed Income supplement application (GIS), Canada Pension Disability application (CPPD), benefit reconsideration, appeal, and tribunal); Canada Revenue (Child Tax, CRA debt); Employment Insurance (application, appeals); student loan (repayment options); debt collections; Workers' Compensation; Employment Standards. Also provides information, resources, and referrals. Monthly BC Housing Workshops are held in the Poverty Law building. Call for further information; dates will be also posted monthly in newsletter and agency Facebook page. Also provides a monthly ProBono Legal Clinic in which clients will have 15 to 20 minutes to discuss legal matters related to family law (such as divorce, separation, and custody), estate law, tenancy law, and minor criminal-related matters. The lawyer can only provide summary advice and cannot take on clients or appear in court on any client's behalf. Please call for dates and times.
