Step Up Program - Nanaimo
Empowers Indigenous youth in care and young adults formerly in care to identify their strengths and needs, and develop a plan to achieve their goals in education, employment, personal and social health, culture and community, and housing with the support of a Hw'iw'tssun'uq worker. Step Up Work Placement provides employment readiness, and work-based training and work experience to help increase independence. The KL Youth Advisory Committee (KLYAC) of current and former Indigenous youth in care act as program advisors and mentors while learning leadership and mentorship skills. Safe, low-barrier, affordable housing is available for Indigenous youth while transitioning from care and participating in the program. Serves the following First Nations and communities: Halalt (Chemainus), Lyackson (Chemainus), Malexel (Malahat), Penelakut (southern Gulf Islands) Qualicum, Snaw-Naw-As (Nanoose), Snuneymuxw (Nanaimo), Stz'uminus (Ladysmith), and Ts'uubaa-asatx (Lake Cowichan.
