Tobacco and Vapour Products Program

Aims to stop youth and young adults from starting to smoke, protect people from exposure to second-hand smoke, and help smokers to quit. QuitNow (www.quitnow.ca) provides 24-hour support for British Columbians who want to quit smoking and vaping. This free service is available by telephone, on the web, or by text. In regional health authorities, tobacco reduction coordinators focus on public awareness and education, promotion of tobacco-free living, and cessation; tobacco enforcement officers enforce retailer compliance with tobacco control laws to restrict youth access to tobacco products and to enforce retailer display restrictions. They also enforce the Tobacco Control Act and the Tobacco Control Regulations which cover the following areas: restrictions on the sale, distribution and advertising or promotion of tobacco including prohibiting sale of tobacco to minors under 19 years of age, prohibiting sale of cigarettes in packages of less than twenty, and requiring warning signs at points of sale; restrictions on where tobacco products may be sold, offered for sale or distributed; restrictions on where tobacco products may be used; restrictions on the retail display of tobacco and the advertising or promotion of the use of tobacco; and specifying the powers of enforcement officers, and their right to seize and detain items that may constitute evidence of a tobacco contravention or an offence.
