Virginia Sam Transition House

Provides safe and secure temporary shelter and support for women, with or without children, who are fleeing violent relationships or who are at risk of abuse, threats, or violence; accompanying older male children considered on a case-by-case basis. Accepts transgender women who have been living as a woman for the past two years, and present and identify as a woman at all times during their stay. Also accepts refugees and refugee claimants, as well as women from out of the province. High-barrier house; women must be in recovery and detoxed for at least 30 days, with evidence of supports in place for recovery prior to acceptance. Accepts women on substitution therapy. Must be able to live communally and take care of oneself. Offers a supportive living environment with access to daily living requirements such as clothing, toiletries, and nutritious meals. Provides advocacy support; assists clients in accessing financial assistance, legal aid, and affordable housing. Offers resource information to enable women to explore their options and define their goals as well as assist with the development of safety plans. Length of stay is approximately 30 days. Accepts referral from self or other; personal identification (ID) is not required. Wheelchair accessible. Does not accept pets. Funded by BC Housing.
