Virtual Indigenous Justice Centre

Provided by: BC First Nations Justice Council

Service Description

Provides culturally appropriate supports to address the over-representation of Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Inuit, and Metis) in the criminal justice system in BC, and eliminates barriers that may prevent someone from attending a justice centre in person. Free legal services are available for family and criminal court cases to Indigenous peoples who live in rural and remote communities, and for clients in other legal proceedings which might lead to imprisonment or a child in need of protection. Works with the court, where appropriate, to divert legal matters from the formal court system to less intrusive measures such as alternative dispute resolution processes, mediation, and restorative justice processes. Helps Indigenous peoples access legal, social, housing, transportation, and health and wellness supports to positively and adequately address the challenges they face in dealing with the justice system. Eligibility criteria for booking an appointment are that the person be Indigenous or self-identify as Indigenous; have a legal issue that falls under a criminal or child protection matter; and have access to a phone or be prepared to call in to speak with a lawyer at a pre-set agreed-upon time. Individuals can access support and book an appointment with a free lawyer by phoning between 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday; some after-hours and weekend appointments may be available. Partnership program with the Province of BC.
