Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society of Prince George (IMSS)
Provides settlement and integration services to immigrants, refugees, and refugee claimants in Prince George and throughout northern BC. Offers workshops, recreation programs, and talking circles for immigrant and refugee seniors, women, and youth. Settlement Program provides information and referrals, language training, community connection supports, and employment related services. Skills Connect for Immigrants provides assessment for language, qualifications, and training requirements; career counselling; job skills training; and employment search assistance. Also offers resources and training to community groups interested in sponsoring refugees. Nonprofit society. Office hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday and 9 am to 4 pm Fridays. Provides free English language classes for adult newcomers ages 17 and up who are permanent residents or refugees (protected persons and convention refugees).
Provides free English language classes for adult newcomers ages 17 and up who are permanent residents or refugees (protected persons and convention refugees). Also assesses prospective students for eligibility and training level; newcomers must first complete a language assessment to find out which level of language class is best for them. Offers part-time classes 9 am to noon Monday to Friday. Provides free child care for pre-school age children. Contact or go to the office for an application form. Supports the social and economic integration of newcomers who are not eligible to receive services from federally funded programs. Program serves refugee claimants, temporary foreign workers, post-secondary international students, provincial nominees who are not yet permanent residents, and recently naturalized citizens who continue to be dependent on settlement support; there may be eligibility restrictions for some services. Immigration and settlement services include orientation, information and referral to community services, trauma counselling, and assistance navigating immigration and work permit applications. Labour market services include job market information, connection to job opportunities, employment counselling, short-term pre-employment and certificate courses, help accessing WorkBC and other employment training and bridging programs, assistance with workplace safety or employment standards violations, and education on workplace rights and responsibilities, work safety, and workplace culture. Language services includes English conversation groups, and English language training. Hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday and 9 am to 4 pm Fridays. Serves Prince George.
