South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH)

Provides supportive services and programs for children, youth, families, seniors, and newcomers to Canada who live in southeast Vancouver. Also offers income tax clinics for people with low incomes, and hosts special events and celebrations throughout the year. The UBC Law Students Legal Advice Program operates bi-weekly during the winter months; call 604-822-5791 for an appointment. Also operates preschool; fees charged, registration required. Office hours are 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday; program hours vary. Nonprofit society, registered charity.

Assists seniors age 55 and over who are in general good health, but have mobility issues and require help with non-medical daily tasks to maintain independent living within their homes and remain connected to their communities.

Assists seniors age 55 and over who are in general good health, but have mobility issues and require help with non-medical daily tasks to maintain independent living within their homes and remain connected to their communities. Services include grocery shopping, friendly visits, snow shovelling, minor home repairs, light yard work, light housekeeping, and transportation (details below). Fees are charged for some services on a sliding scale (based on income). Serves Vancouver South. Program hours vary; office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday. Program is run in partnership with Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS). Funding is provided by Ministry of Health (MOH) and managed by United Way British Columbia (UWBC).

Volunteer driver service is available across Metro Vancouver for all purposes for seniors ages 65 and up with mobility issues. Service includes help with vehicle entry/exit, space for personal attendant, and can accommodate walkers. Service hours are flexible. Pre-registration and advance booking of two business days is required; intake requires a home visit. Cost to client depends on household income, with sliding scale and subsidy available; clients pay direct. Interpretation service may be available. Office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday.

Supports the social and economic integration of newcomers in Vancouver who are not eligible to receive services from federally funded programs. Program serves immigrants, refugees, and refugee claimants in Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Korean, Punjabi, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Also serves Ukrainians under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel program. Immigration and settlement services include orientation, information and referral to community services, assistance navigating immigration and work permit applications, short-term crisis/mental health counselling, and support groups. Labour market services include job market information, connection to job opportunities, employment counselling, help accessing WorkBC and other employment training and bridging programs, assistance with workplace safety or employment standards violations, and education on workplace rights and responsibilities, work safety, and workplace culture. Language services include English conversation groups. For Chinese immigrants, settlement services are offered from 9 am to 4 pm Tuesday to Saturday, and for Korean immigrants from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. Services for South Asian immigrants who speak Hindi or Punjabi include citizenship classes and a senior women's group at Sunset Community Centre from 12:30 pm to 3 pm Fridays.
