Building Better Babies

Services for pregnant women and women up to six months postpartum include screening and assessment, brief intervention during pregnancy and early postpartum, counselling (individual, family, and group), referral, and access to child care and transportation for clients. Focuses on nutrition and health, provides supplemental food, and offers peer support. Pays particular attention to preventing low birthweight and fetal alcohol syndrome/fetal alcohol effects (FAS/FAE). Prevention activities include promoting community awareness of healthy pregnancy practices, and providing education in schools regarding pregnancy and the use of alcohol. Funding by Island Health and Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) as a Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP).
