Choose to Move

Provided by: University of British Columbia (UBC)

Service Description

A free six-month program to enhance the mobility and health of BC seniors. Combines a person-centred approach with opportunities for seniors to connect. Open to adults age 65 and up who would like support to become active. Participants work with a trained activity coach who helps them develop a tailor-made physical activity plan based on personal interests, abilities, and income. Individuals choose activities they will enjoy and are able to do. Activities can range from organized fitness classes (e.g., Tai Chi, yoga) to individual activities they do on their own schedule (e.g., gardening, walking). Seniors learn to monitor and adjust their goals and activities with support from their activity coach. Facilitated group meetings provide a space for participants to share experiences, ideas, and information (e.g. self-care), and to actively engage with their community. Offered throughout BC; see website for list of program locations and providers. Also available online and over-the-phone. Call or email preferred location to register; participants must attend an information session. Offered by the Active Aging Society in partnership with YMCA and the BC Recreation and Parks Association. Funded by Ministry of Health (MOH), and evaluated by the Active Aging Research Team.
