Death Benefit

One-time payment, payable to the estate or other eligible individuals of a deceased Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributor. Basic amount is $2,500, with a possible top-up of $2,500. For the top-up amount the deceased must have never received payments under a CPP program, and not have a surviving spouse or common-law partner who is eligible to receive a survivor's pension. Applications can be submitted through My Service Canada Account or by completing the form available online and submitting it by mail or at a Service Canada centre, as soon as possible after the contributor's death. Phone hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
