Disability Benefits
The Canada Disability Benefit provides direct financial support to people with disabilities ages 18 to 64. Must be a Canadian resident, and must have been approved for the disability tax credit. Benefit amounts based on family net income; maximum benefit is $200 per month. Applications can be completed through the online form, by phone with Service Canada, in person at a Service Canada office, or by mail (printable form available on the website). Phone lines open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is a long-term savings plan that helps Canadians with disabilities and their families save for the future. Matching grants and bonds available; amounts vary based on family income. Plans can be opened at a financial institution. Phones hours are 8 am to 5 pm ET. The Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits provides monthly payments to CPP contributors who are under 65 and unable to work because of a severe and prolonged disability. Applications accepted through My Service Canada Account online; completed paper forms can also be submitted by mail or dropped off at a Service Canada centre; supporting medical documentation must also be submitted. Phone hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Website also lists tax credits and deductions available to persons with disabilities, their supporting family members, and their caregivers.
