First Nations Court - Kamloops
Specialized sentencing court sits at least once a month. Does not conduct trials but is for sentencing of criminal matters and mediation of family court matters, which fall under provincial jurisdiction. The focus is holistic, recognizing the unique circumstances of Indigenous people charged with criminal offences within the framework of existing laws. All parties are invited to speak, including Crown, duty counsel, the client, victim and victim's family, social workers, and the like. After the discussion, there is a healing plan created to address the root cause of the criminal act and provide the client with the help and support that they need. Defendants are expected to adhere to their healing plans and must appear at future dates to report on their progress. Duty counsel is available to provide free legal advice regarding criminal and family matters. Serves Clearwater and Kamloops, Lillooet, and Merritt.
