First Nations Court - North Vancouver

Service Description

Court sits once a month and is for sentencing of criminal matters and mediation of family court matters which fall under provincial jurisdiction. The focus is holistic, recognizing the unique circumstances of First Nations offenders within the framework of existing laws. All parties are invited to speak, including Crown, duty counsel, the offender, victim and victim's family, social workers, and the like. After the discussion, there is a healing plan created to address the root cause of the criminal act and provide the offender with the help and support that he or she needs. Defendants are expected to adhere to their healing plans and must appear at future dates to report on their progress. Serves North Vancouver, Pemberton, Sechelt, Squamish, West Vancouver, and Whistler.
