Poverty Law Advocacy Program

Provides free, confidential legal information, advocacy and referrals to low-income residents of the qathet region, offering support with disability benefits (provincial Persons with Disability (PWD) and federal CPP-Disability (CPP-D)); tenancy issues such as dispute resolution process and Residential Tenancy Branch hearings; income assistance including help with Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction applications, rent bank, and community crisis grants; seniors issues such as Old Age Security, CPP, and GIS; debt and consumer issues; human rights issues including BC Human Rights Tribunal; low income housing including applications with BC Housing; employment law such as workers' rights and the Employment Standards Act; and family law (information and referral only). Within these areas of service, the program can help with understanding rights and responsibilities; identifying deadlines and limitation periods; clarifying goals and options; reviewing legislation, statutes and regulations; getting started with applications, reconsiderations and appeals; communicating with landlords, government agencies, creditors, and decision makers; preparing for hearings, tribunals and first meeting with a lawyer; addressing systemic issues that affect marginalized groups; and locating other resources. Note that an advocate is not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. Office hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Funded by Law Foundation of BC.
