Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER)

Provides a monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents age 60 or over with low to moderate incomes. Eligible seniors have lived in BC for 12 months prior to applying; meet citizenship requirements; live in private market housing and pay more than 30% of gross monthly household income towards rent; do not receive income assistance through the BC Employment and Assistance (BCEA) Act or the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Act; and do not have a gross monthly income exceeding current income rates. Existing clients need to reapply each year. Service is in English; callers who require interpretation must make arrangements in advance. Office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday; phone hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
