Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER)

Provides a monthly rent supplement to eligible BC seniors age 60 or over with low to moderate incomes. Eligible seniors have lived in BC for 12 months prior to applying; meet citizenship requirements; pay more than 30% of gross monthly household income towards rent; do not live in subsidized housing or a residential care facility funded by the Ministry of Health; do not live in co-operative housing; do not receive income assistance; and do not have a gross monthly income exceeding a certain amount (see website for details). Existing clients need to reapply each year. Service is in English; callers who require interpretation must make arrangements in advance. Office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday; phone hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
