Victim Safety Unit (VSU) - Notification and Information Services

Provided by: Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General

Service Description

Provides notification to victims of crime, and persons protected by a civil protection order, about adult offenders' court proceedings and BC Corrections' movements (custody or community status). Victim Safety Unit (VSU) notifications may include court updates, release dates, and copies of orders. This service is available for all victims of crime and civil protected parties. The focus is on victims and protected parties with safety concerns (particularly high-risk crimes such as sexual assault, robbery, threats, and family violence). Information is available where the offender is going through the criminal court process (provincial, supreme, or appeal court in BC), or where the offender has been given a provincial sentence (a period of custody under two years or an order to be served in the community). Also represents victims on the high-risk offender advisory committee (this committee recommends conditions for those offenders who are still considered a high risk to re-offend after having served their full sentence; these conditions may include no contact with victims).

Also offers general information on protection orders such as how to apply for one as well as help in understanding the conditions of the order. The office can also confirm the registration of an order, provide information on how to report a breach of the order, and provide copies of protection orders.

Registration for the victim notification service can be done by submitting an application online on the VSU website, by phone, or by emailing, mailing, or faxing a completed application form to the VSU. Office hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.
